Wolves rally late, win in shootout
Chicago Wolves captain Jason Krog tied the game at 1-1 with 2:25 remaining in regulation and right wing Darren Haydar scored in the shootout for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the Manitoba Moose at the Allstate Arena.
Wolves goaltender Peter Mannino (6-3-0) stopped all five Moose attempts in the shootout and posted 25 saves on 26 shots in regulation and overtime to pick up his fifth straight win.
After failing to crack the scoreboard for the first 57:35 of the game, Krog finally got the Wolves (11-12-1-0) on the board at 17:35 of the third period. The rebound from Haydar's shot on the power play caromed right to Krog, and he fired it through traffic in front of the net past Moose goaltender Eddie Lack.
“They did a very good job of hemming us in all game and making us play in our own zone,” Wolves coach Don Lever said. “We did a good job on the penalty kill in the third period and overtime, and Peter made some big saves, especially in the shootout.”
Manitoba (11-6-0-2) cracked the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead at 14:01 of the second period. With the Moose working on the power play, defenseman Kevin Connauton took a pass from right wing Sergei Shirokov low in the zone, and his centering pass across the crease deflected off a Wolves player's skates and past Mannino.
The Wolves hit the road for a three-game swing this weekend, beginning Friday against the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena.
