Buckle down, U.N., on Haiti relief
Riots in Haiti are absolutely no reason that the United Nations should be delaying supplies to a country in the middle of a cholera outbreak.
Doctors Without Borders are reporting over 16,000 infected persons. The numbers are already staggering, but are only predicted to increase. Halting the flow of medical supplies like soap and water chlorination projects is both irresponsible and dangerous. If the U.N. is serious about helping, they'd better stop feeding into local Haitian drama and focus on stopping the disease.
Instead of allowing hundreds of thousands of people to become sick, international aid is required. Unfortunately, the U.N. is the only organization that seems willing. Perhaps peacemakers, rather than peacekeepers, need to find their way to the country. Because that will never happen, the U.N. needs to buckle down and continue providing relief. Early treatment is the key and hundreds of thousands of people are at stake.
