Kitchen studio designer earns Design Vision Award
The National Kitchen & Bath Association's Chicago Midwest chapter recently named Susan Klimala, designer and co-owner of The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn, and Renee Dion of The Dion Group as one of its 2010 Design Vision winners.
The competition honors kitchen and bath designers who plan safe, functional and beautiful spaces on the basis of visual appeal and creativity, as well as principles of design and presentation. Klimala and Dion won first place in the small kitchens category.
“Winning this award was made even more special because it was a wonderful collaborative effort between the homeowners, Shanna and Brad Faris, interior designer Renee Dion, and myself,” said designer Susan Klimala. “This project's success demonstrates that an interior designer, kitchen designer and client can join forces to produce an amazing end result.”
The desire for a great-looking space that could be utilized by multiple cooks and serve as a hub for entertaining was made possible by adding a large island to the kitchen. The new island houses the main sink and provides ample seating for four.
In addition to serving as the focal point of the space, the new island offers the homeowners additional counter space for meal preparation and a layout allowing for interaction with their two children while working in the kitchen.
Klimala not only utilized efficient planning and superior design, she also added some personal touches for the family. A “Mom's area” was incorporated into the space, which includes baskets for kid's projects, a bulletin board and an area for a laptop.
“Working with The Kitchen Studio and The Dion Group was a great experience,” said homeowner Shanna Faris. “Susan from The Kitchen Studio was instrumental in making sure we made the best possible use of the space by helping us determine which type of cabinetry and appliances were best suited to our needs. Interior designer Renee Dion made certain that all the components, from the tile and granite, to the finishes on the light fixtures and hardware, reflected the look we were hoping to achieve,”
