Barrington-area NAMI annual meeting features bipolar expert

The public is invited to join members of the Barrington area chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, for their annual membership meeting which will feature keynote speaker Dr. James L. Reilly, associate professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Illinois, Chicago, talking on understanding the overlap between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The meeting is 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Barrington Village Hall, 200 S. Hough St.

Reilly is a lead researcher in a project involving a group of university medical centers funded beginning in 2007 by the National Institutes of Health to learn about the risk for serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, and bipolar disorder.

Similar to medical disorders like diabetes and heart disease, these illnesses run in families. People struggling with these illnesses often have overlapping symptoms and other associated traits. The purpose of his research is to help better understand the causes of these illnesses and develop better treatments.

There is no fee or registration to attend this program.
