Carpentersville cops target DUIs

The Carpentersville Police Department will be conducting roadside safety checks Wednesday evening to try to decrease the number of alcohol-related crashes.

The department does checks like this throughout the year, often around the holidays, according to Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart.

“The hope is to reduce DUIs,” Bosshart said. “I think it's been pretty effective over the years.”

Carpentersville Police received funding for the safety check and the cost of additional officers to conduct it through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety distributed the money.

Though watching for alcohol-impaired drivers is the key of the initiative, officers also will be taking action based on other violations. That means equipment, insurance or seat belt violations and drivers license offenses, too.

The safety checks will be in the area of Randall and Huntley roads on the evening of Nov. 24.
