Antioch grad McKenzie clutch for Central College
When it comes to clutch goals, no one at Central College has been better than former Antioch soccer standout Brett McKenzie.
He is first all time at Central with 15 and ended up third on the all-time school scoring list with 38 goals.
McKenzie has been named the 2010 IIAC men's soccer MVP.
McKenzie, Central's first IIAC MVP in the sport, started each of the 16 games he played this season. He led the Dutch in scoring with 25 points on a league-high 11 goals and 3 assists and also had a team-high 5 game-winning goals.
McKenzie, who earned his third all-conference honor, leads all IIAC players in points per game (1.56), goals scored and game-winning goals. In eight conference matches, he scored 9 points on 4 goals and 1 assist.
Women's volleyball
Senior Kasey Kiepura (Vernon Hills) was voted to the first team of the Northern Athletics Conference.
She has been part of a remarkable turnaround for the Dominican volleyball program, coming to a team that was 0-28 as a freshman and helping the Stars to their first regular-season conference championship in 2009, and first NAC Tournament Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship in 2010.
Kiepura ranked second in the NAC in blocks per set at 0.96. Her final season stats included 204 kills with a .231 hitting percentage, 28 service aces with a team-high serving efficiency of .950. She had 30 solo blocks plus 81 assisted blocks for a total of 111, ranking first on the team and second in the conference with 0.96 blocks per set.
Kiepura also accumulated 64 digs and had a team second-best 302.5 point, averaging 2.56 points per set.
Ÿ Southern Illinois standout Jennifer Berwanger (Lake Zurich) was named the 2010-11 recipient of the Charlotte West Scholarship.
Berwanger is nearing the end of her fifth season at SIU. In 2009, she became the fourth player in school history to twice garner first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after ranking top-10 in the league in kills, digs and points, recording 18 double-doubles last season. She also ranks No. 3 in program history for matches played in a career, totaling 124 court appearances as a Saluki. Since her redshirt season in 2006, Berwanger has played in 116 consecutive matches for SIU.
As a four-year Salukis starter, she's been named to six all-tournament teams and ranks in several categories in the school record books. The senior ranks in career attack attempts (second, 3,955), career digs (second, 1,554), career kills (fourth, 1,348) and career attacks per set (third, 8.97). She is also the Salukis' active leader in double-doubles with 56 in four seasons.
Jennifer is the third member of her family to receive the prestigious scholarship. Her oldest sister, Katie, was named the recipient in 2003-04 as a member of the women's basketball team and her sister and former teammate, Kristie, was honored in 2008-09.
“For the last 10 years, a Berwanger sister has been making her mark in the classroom and on the court for Saluki Athletics,” said SIU senior associate AD Kathy Jones. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of Katie, Kristie and Jennifer, including receiving this award.”
Football
Carthage senior quarterback Evan Jones (Grayslake) was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's offensive player of the year.
Jones averaged 288.0 passing yards per game, 277.3 total offensive yards per game and threw 23 touchdown passes.
Jones is the sixth Carthage player to win the award and the first since running back Dante Washington in 2004. Jones is also just the second Red Men quarterback to gain the honor.
Ÿ Matt Blanchard (Lake Zurich), the starting quarterback for Wisconsin-Whitewater, was named to the first-team offense in the Wisconsin Intercollegete Athletic Conference.
Blanchard led the team to a 10-0 record and the conference championship. The junior ranks third in the nation in Division III pass efficiency.
He has completed 163 of 225 attempts for 2,132 yards, 21 touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the season in a 24-0 victory over UW-La Crosse. The interception on his second pass ended his school-record string of 213 pass attempts without a pick. Blanchard was sacked just three times during the regular season.
Ÿ Junior defensive lineman Peter Bulandr (Stevenson) was selected second-team all-conference in the College Conference of Wisconsin and Illinois.
Ÿ Nick Angellotti (Wauconda) was named honorable-mentione all-conference for St. Cloud State despite missing four games becauseof meniscus tears. St. Cloud finished 9-2 in the regular season and earned a national playoff berth.
Women's soccer
Alex Hauser (Carmel) is a starting forward/defender for UW-Parkside, (16-2-2 and ranked No. 15 nationally), which won a thrilling NCAA second-round tournament game 4-3 over No. 16 Northern Kentucky to advance to the NCAA regionals at Grand Valley State (Michigan).
Hauser, a two-year starter from Lake Villa, attended Carmel High School and helped the Corsairs qualify for the state finals for the first time.
Wrestling
Southern Illinois' Dillon Pousson (Round Lake) placed third at the Central Missouri Open, going 5-1 with 2 falls at 149 pounds.

Magic Basketball/MD Basketball will be hosting two camps Nov. 28 at the Sports City Academy in Woodstock. You can email info@martydellobasketball.com with any questions. Online Registration is available at www.martyydello basketball.com. Participants will learn the practice technique that players in the NBA, college and high school ranks are using. Third- through eighth-graders will play from 1-3 p.m. on Nov. 28. The fee of $40 includes a t-shirt.
