Deveaux has hat trick in Wolves win

Andre Deveaux scored 3 goals to lead the Chicago Wolves past the Lake Erie Monsters 5-2 at the Allstate Arena on Sunday night.

Deveaux's hat trick was the second of the year for the Wolves and the third of his professional career. Darren Haydar and Spencer Machacek scored the other goals for the Wolves, who have won two straight.

“(The Monsters) are a really good checking team and we knew it wasn't going to be easy,” said Wolves coach Don Lever. “But we dug down in the trenches there in the third period and got a big goal from Deveaux. It's nice to see that line contributing.”

The Wolves took a 1-0 lead 17:55 into the first period. Jamie Hunt took a slap shot from the left faceoff circle, and Deveaux deflected it out of the air past goaltender Jason Bacashihua.

A power-play opportunity early in the second period helped Lake Erie draw even. Mark Olver camped out near the left post and was able to chip the puck past Wolves goaltender Peter Mannino after it ricocheted off the boards and onto his stick at 2:23.

The Wolves made it 2-1 just over two minutes later with a goal by Machacek. He collected the puck in the left face-off circle and flipped a backhanded shot past Bacashihua at 4:34.

Deveaux put the Wolves up 3-1 when he skated in on a 2-on-1 and ripped a shot past Bacashihua, top shelf, from the top of the circle.

The Wolves took a 4-1 lead at 12:46 of the second when Jason Krog launched a shot straight down the slot. Haydar was at the top of the crease to deflect it out of the air and into the net.

The Monsters cut it to 4-2 just before the second intermission on a goal by Olver.

Deveaux completed the hat trick late in the third period when he drove down the boards, cut to the middle and followed up the rebound of his own shot, angling it past Bacashihua.

Bacashihua stopped 19 shots, and Mannino stopped 33.
