Outlook: As he begins his fifth season, Yates welcomes back six girls who saw significant playing time for the defending MSL West champs. Kubis, Gray and McConnell are returning starters. Kubis, Gray, Groot, and Wiedemann return for their third year on the varsity. Gray has been one of the conference’s best interior defenders for the past two years. She added 3-point shooting range to her game last year and stepped up her offensive production this summer. Kubis, an all conference selection last year, is the glue to the team. “She plays great defense, she can play any perimeter position and she is an extremely competitive player who does everything right that does not show up in the box score,” Yates said. McConnell made a big splash as a freshman on the varsity last year. “She was one of the best on-the-ball defenders in the conference as a freshman and I am very excited to see what she can accomplish this season,” Yates said. “The sky is the limit for her.” The five seniors are the most Yates has had as the Fremd coach. “They are a very close-knit group of girls who are excited for their opportunity to add to the great history of Fremd girls basketball,” Yates said. “They provided excellent leadership this past summer and have established a very competitive atmosphere in our practices.” Yates said he has a number of girls who are excited to step into more prominent roles this season. Among the Vikes team strengths are speed, perimeter play and shooting (seven players can consistently hit 3-pointers).
