Scouting Montini boys basketball

Montini

Coach: Brian Opoka (third year, 5-47).

Last year: 3-24, 0-8, fifth in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division; lost 69-36 to St. Francis in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals.

Top players: Rich Bodee, Jr, F; Ben Brady, Jr, G; Dan Burke, Jr, C; Jon Gibbs, Jr, G; Tyshawn Johnson, Jr, G; Asante McKinley, Jr, G; Jim Miller, Jr, G; T.J. Murray, sr., F.

Scouting report: Juniors own 12 of 14 varsity spots. All of those above except Bolingbrook transfer Gibbs and McKinley played at least 24 games last season. Opoka sounds overjoyed with a basketball-committed group and lower-level numbers. For a program that’s won 5 games in two years he’s not expecting leaps and bounds but figures on being competitive. Dynamic Johnson averaged team highs of 12.7 points and 4.4 rebounds among regulars a year ago, and Bodee can hit the outside shot and blocked a team-high 26 shots. The Broncos again figure to be undersized and must improve upon last season’s 43 points per game. “I guarantee we’re going to be a lot better than we were last year,” Opoka said.
