The White Sox have purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Anthony Carter and shortstop Eduardo Escobar from Class AA Birmingham and right-hander Nate Jones from Class A Winston-Salem.
Carter, 24, went 1-4 with 22 saves and a 3.92 ERA (25 ER/57.1 IP) and 58 strikeouts in 46 games (two starts) with Birmingham in 2010. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder tied for the Southern League lead in saves and limited opponents to a .226 (47-208) average. He was named to the SL mid-season All-Star Team in his first season as a reliever.
Carter was named to the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Team after recording a 3.60 ERA (4 ER/10.0 IP) with three saves and 16 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances with the Peoria Saguaros.
Over five minor-league seasons, Carter has gone 30-29 with a 4.57 ERA (249 ER/490.2 IP) in 129 appearances (84 starts). He originally was selected in the 26th round of the 2005 draft out of Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga.
Escobar, 21, combined to hit .277 (158-570) with 11 triples, six home runs, 61 RBI and 79 runs scored last season in 136 games with Winston-Salem and Birmingham. He was named to the Carolina League mid and postseason All-Star Teams with the Dash and also was cited by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Shortstop in the CL.
Escobar, a native of Villa de Cara, Venezuela, also played for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .300 (33-110) with four home runs and 15 RBI in 28 games to earn a spot on the AFL Rising Stars Team.
He owns a .271 (352-1,301) average over three minor-league seasons after signing with the White Sox as a free agent on January 28, 2006.
Jones, 24, was 11-6 with a 4.08 ERA (69 ER/152.1 IP) and 109 strikeouts in 28 starts with Winston-Salem in 2010, his first season working exclusively as a starter. The 6-foot-5, 190 pound Jones is 17-18 with a 4.48 ERA (166 ER/333.2 IP) and 303 strikeouts in four seasons in the Sox minor-league system after being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 draft out of Northern Kentucky University.
