Police: Students brought marijuana to school

A pair of South Elgin High School students were arrested Wednesday on charges they tried to sell marijuana at the school, police said.

Lavell M. Massey, 17, of the 900 block of Lavoie Avenue, Elgin, and a 15-year-old boy from Elgin were each charged with delivery of marijuana on school grounds, police said. Massey was charged in adult court.

According to South Elgin Police Sgt. Mike Doty, Massey brought two small plastic bags of marijuana to the school at 7:20 a.m. 20 minutes before school starts.

He then instructed the 15-year-old to sell the drugs at the school for $20, Doty said.

“Nothing is known at this point if any drugs were sold,” Doty said.

A school staffer told police the pair had drugs and school staff did a search, turning up less than 10 grams of marijuana, Doty said.

School personnel then brought the drugs to the police officer stationed at the school and the boys were subsequently arrested, he said.

The 15-year-old boy was sent to the Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles and his case was heard today.

Kane County Judge Bruce Lester set Massey's bail at $1,500 and he is due in court Nov. 24. at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Delivery of marijuana on school grounds is a Class 4 felony that carries a prison sentence range between 1 and 3 years or 2½ years probation.

Tony Sanders, a spokesman for Elgin Area School District U-46, said he could not comment on the individual cases, but said the allegations, if true, are grounds for expulsion.
