Meier, Carmel clip Highland Park

At Mundelein, Jackie Meier scored 23 points, as the Corsairs improved to 2-1 in the tournament with a 56-38 vcitory over Highland Park on Wednesday.

Carmel, which rebounded from Tuesday's loss to Rolling Meadows, also received 12 points from Sarah McHugh. Sisters Kayla and Erin Quinn had 9 and 8 points, respectively.

"Awesome," Carmel coach Kelly Perz said. "That's a really good win for us against a good team.

"We struggled (against Rolling Meadows). Outside shots weren't falling. Layups weren't falling. We had foul trouble. I felt that everything that could go wrong, went wrong."

Wednesday was just the opposite. The Corsairs closed the half with a three-point run on 2 free throws by Quinn and one by Meier and led 23-20.

They were up 41-30 after three quarters.

"Everything that could go right went right," Perz said. "We played a zone, which we're not accustomed to, but we played so well. Team defense is why we won the game."

The only negative for Carmel was center Beth Scudder suffered what Perz called a concussion when she accidentally got hit in the head.

Scudder did not play the second half.

Rolling Meadows 47, Grayslake North 30: At Mundelein, Ann Marie Lynch and Morgan Keller each scored 12 points, and Jacqueline Kemph added 11 for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-0 in the tournament.

Grayslake North (0-3) was led by Katie McGrath's 9 points.
