A veteran offers praise and thanks

On Oct. 5, I was diagnosed with carcinoma of the throat. I'm writing to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.

When I was diagnosed, it was devastating. I talked to numerous surgeons about my options. My wife and I chose a procedure that could remove my cancer without removing my voice box. On Nov. 5, I had a 12-hour operation, and two days later I was able to walk the halls in ICU with help from my nurses. Doctors and nurses have been continually checking my progress without fail. They have all been such great people who are dedicated to our veterans' health care needs.

Being in my late 50s, I appreciate that they not only saved my speech but were able to prolong my life. Thank God there's something good to write about in these dismal days of war and death. I again thank you for supporting our troops and veterans. God bless the doctors, the nurses and the entire Hines staff for giving me the opportunity to be able to write this letter of gratitude. I know they will know me because my name is so easy to pronounce.
