State Street reopens in Elgin

State Street in Elgin is open again after a Wednesday afternoon traffic accident closed the area between Wing Street and Big Timber Road.

José Gomez, 40, was driving on the 700 block of North State Street when he lost control of his 1999 Cadillac and crashed into an electrical pole, according to police spokeswoman Sue Olafson.

The accident on Elgin's near west side cut the power to 1,000 ComEd customers and the traffic light at Kimball and North State streets, authorities said.

Elgin police and fire departments responded to the crash just before 1:30 p.m.

Gomez was taken to Sherman Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.

ComEd managed to restore power to 654 customers within seven minutes of the crash, ComEd spokesman Matt Levin said.

Crews remained on the scene to restore power to remaining customers. All homes had power by 4:30 p.m., according to Levin.

Authorities reopened State Street at 4:45 p.m., but the traffic light was back on by 10 p.m. Wednesday.
