First candidate kicks off St. Charles municipal election season
A former law and economics teacher wants to bring some of those lessons to the St. Charles City Council. Ray Rogina made the first splash in the city's municipal elections by announcing his candidacy this week.
Rogina seeks the seat currently held by Third Ward Alderman John McGuirk. Rogina cites an endorsement from McGuirk in a written statement announcing his candidacy. McGuirk will not seek re-election. Rogina also indicates he is endorsed by William Turner, the other Third Ward alderman.
“The guiding precept of my desire to give back to St. Charles through leadership is a willingness to provide constituents with fairness and an open mind as I apply my skills and knowledge to seek opportunities and resolve challenges facing the city,” Rogina said. “With an economic downturn upon us and the need to keep the city's fiscal house in order, the challenge of maintaining adequate revenue streams while continuing to provide excellent city services takes center stage.”
Rogina, 62, taught law and economics at St. Charles and St. Charles East high schools for 30 years. He currently serves as an adjunct instructor for Aurora University.
Rogina has been a frequent attendee at recent city council meetings.
In addition to McGuirk, the seats served by Aldermen Dan Stellato (Ward 1), Betsy Penny (Ward 2), Jim Martin (Ward 4) and Ed Bessner (Ward 5) are up for re-election. There will be a second Ward 5 seat open since David Richards resigned his post this week.
Candidates seeking office can file their petitions Dec. 13 to Dec. 20.
