Black ice causes crashes in suburbs

Drivers are urged to slow down by police this morning after about a dozen accidents on roads throughout the suburbs area due to black ice conditions.

Icy patches seem worst in the Elgin area, along with some parts of Lake County, as ground fog created slippery surfaces on the roadways, officials said.

Six accidents have sprung up in Lake County alone between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., while 4 additional accidents were recorded in Elgin at the same time this morning.

Additional ice-related accidents occurred in Wheeling, Buffalo Grove and Des Plaines.

Officials from the Illinois State Police said the ice will melt as temperatures rise in the morning. But, people should take caution and slow down until the black ice clears up.
