Northwestern's Shurna gets Big Ten honors again

Northwestern junior forward John Shurna of Glen Ellyn has been selected as the Big Ten Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday.

It is the third career honor for the Glenbard West grad, who also earned the recognition twice as a sophomore.

Shurna tied a career scoring high with 31 points tand 9 rebounds in the Wildcats' season-opening 97-78 victory Friday at Northern Illinois. Shurna recorded 22 of his points over the opening 10 minutes of the second half to help NU pull away from the Huskies. All of Shurna's career-best seven 3-point baskets came after the intermission.

Northwestern (1-0) returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday as it travels to Texas-Pan American. The Wildcats' home opener is set for 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tickets for that contest are available at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
