Illinois linebacker suspended after arrest
CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois linebacker Evan Frierson has been indefinitely suspended from the football team after he was arrested and preliminarily charged with aggravated battery.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn says the 20-year-old Frierson was arrested just after midnight Sunday in Champaign after an argument and fight in the campus' Green Street bar and restaurant district. She says Frierson is accused of punching two men who were standing in a crosswalk as cars tried to drive through. One of the men required medical attention.
Brown says Frierson wasn't available for comment.
Frierson is a 6-2, 230-pound sophomore from Washington, D.C. He has played sparingly in nine games this season and played in all 12 Illinois games as a freshman.
