Stocks end mixed as dollar gains strength
NEW YORK — Stocks are closing mixed as the dollar strengthens over concerns that Ireland may need to be bailed out by its European neighbors.
The stronger dollar, which tends to hurt U.S. exports, led stocks to pare their gains from a strong report earlier Monday on retail sales for October.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 9, or 0.1 percent, to close at 11,202. It had been up as much as 88 earlier in the day.
The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 1, or 0.1 percent, to 1,198, and the Nasdaq is down 4, or 0.2 percent, to 2,514.
Gaining and falling shares were even on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 878 million shares.
