Contrail mystery a little disconcerting

The American people pay taxes so that the government may perform its duties, one of which is protecting our nation. If the Pentagon is so poorly coordinated that it doesn't know what is happening on one of our coasts, then what are we supposed to assume about their ability to protect us from threats abroad?

I can't help but wonder what if the smoke wasn't a plane but a missile? One can only assume that the Pentagon would still be scrambling for answers as FEMA simultaneously shuffled toward to disaster site. Hundreds of billions of dollars are paid each year to aid the defense department of our government.

Hopefully they will start to put some of that to use.
