Don't try, try again, library

After the defeat of the St. Charles library proposals, the reaction by the board president was the height of arrogance. Instead of submitting to the will of the people at 53 percent and 60 percent, she merely said that we will try again in a couple of years.

That is the typical reaction these days. If the voters say no, keep trying until they get tired of resisting.

Instead, the board should be laying out plans to live within their means just like everyone else. Get rid of superfluous services like DVDs and CDs. Netflix costs around $1 per rental and most kids are downloading music to their iPods. Besides it's virtually impossible to have a relevant collection.

Perhaps make small charges for services such as excessive computer use and meeting rooms as was suggested by several citizens. I'm sure there are other ideas.

Just remember, board, we will still be watching in the next several years. And by that time, technology will have advanced even further as Google and e-readers continue to expand and reduce the need for library expansion.
