Trial set for Libertyville developer in murder-for-hire case

A trial date in Denver has been set for the Libertyville businessman who was indicted in a plot to hire a hit on a business associate in October.

72-year-old Brooks Kellogg, president of a Libertyville real estate firm, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week after attempting to pay an undercover FBI agent $2,000 to kill a Florida man in October.

The U.S. District Court has set a tentative trial date for Jan. 3, with three days set aside for the trial, according to the Department of Justice.

Kellogg is currently being held without bond on two counts stating he crossed state lines with the intention that a murder be committed in exchange for money, according to the department.

He was arrested at the Denver International Airport on Oct. 19 after he flew to the airport to meet with an undercover agent who he thought was a hitman.

The man he wanted dead had won a lawsuit against him totaling $2.5 million earlier this year.
