Roof problems at Elgin special ed school

Class is canceled today at an Elgin special education school where engineers are trying to determine how concrete slabs fell from the building's roof.

Staff at the Larkin Center's school at 515 Sports Way discovered the damage in the nurse's room last Thursday night, and engineers came out first thing Friday morning, said Dennis Graf, the center's executive director.

But after a closer look over the weekend, engineers said they'd need more time to complete their work.

Graf said class was held on Monday, but not in any classrooms. The school utilized its “safe space” in the gymnasium, auditorium, all purpose room and cafeteria. Some students attended school at temporary classrooms at the Larkin Center's main campus, 1212 Larkin Ave.

Approximately 60 students attend Larkin's special education school.

No one was hurt by falling slabs.

“We don't know for sure if there's any danger. We don't know if there isn't. That's the hard part about doing this until engineers complete their survey,” Graf said.
