Tri-State crash leaves 7 injured in Rosemont
Seven people were injured when a medical emergency caused a driver to rear-end a vehicle that was stopped at a toll plaza on the Tri-State Tollway late Sunday afternoon.
A 40-year-old Harvey man was paying an attendant at the Irving Park Road Toll Plaza with his wife and four children in a Ford Expedition when John Ryan, 62, of Libertyville crashed into the back of their vehicle, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Susan Ewald.
Police said Ryan suffered a “medical emergency” just before 4 p.m., which caused him to crash a 2009 Toyota into the Expedition in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State.
All six passengers in the Expedition, including four children under the age of 15, suffered minor injuries and were transported to Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, state police said.
Ryan was also transported to Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge and treated for minor injuries, police said.
The tollbooth was shut down for about an hour after the crash, but the toll attendant was not injured, state police said.
Both vehicles were deemed non-drivable and towed from the scene.
Ryan was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
