Barrington photo exhibit focuses on coping with cancer
An opening reception for “Finding Strength,” a photo/narrative exhibit exploring the unique experiences of those touched by cancer, will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Highway 22, Barrington.
The photographs are by Susan McConnell and the narratives by Mary Klest. McConnell's photographs capture the warmth and love of the people involved; while Klest's compelling narratives tell the story of their experiences at Wellness Place, a cancer education and support center located in Palatine.
“These profoundly moving stories and pictures are intended to increase awareness of what cancer patients endure and how the programs offered at Wellness Place help as they experience treatment and survivorship,” said Kathy Umlauf, executive director, Northwest Cultural Council. “I am so very honored to present this remarkable exhibit of talent and compassion in our galleries, and also allow others to learn about Wellness Place.”
The artists and the cancer survivors, along with their families, will be present at the reception.
Wellness Place, a not-for-profit organization, opened in September 2000 and offers programs and services to thousands of people with cancer, at no charge to the participants. It is funded by individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations.
The center provides services ranging from counseling, education and support to yoga, art therapy, and hypnosis. Wellness Place is located in Williamsburg Village at the intersection of Roselle Road and Euclid Avenue, Palatine. For information, call (847) 221-2444 or go to wellnessplace.org.
