City accepts feedback on Smart Grid Initiative Customer Bill of Rights
The City of Naperville continues to seek input on the draft version of the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative Customer Bill of Rights, which is available to view on the city's website at www.naperville.il.us/smartgrid.aspx. This document will provide the city's utility customers with an outline of their core rights as it relates to the smart grid initiative and was developed based on customer feedback and input, overall program goals and current national and state guidelines and policies for smart grid projects.
The City Council will consider the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative Customer Bill of Rights at its Tuesday, Nov. 16 City Council meeting. The draft Customer Bill of Rights focuses on four topics: the right to be informed, the right to privacy, the right to options and the right to data security. The document in its entirety can be viewed at www.naperville.il.us/smartgrid.aspx and will also be available in PDF format as part of the Nov. 16 City Council agenda packet. The November 16 City Council agenda packet will be posted to the city's website at www.naperville.il.us/granicus.html no later than Wednesday, Nov. 10.
To help facilitate input, residents or interested parties can e-mail their comments on the draft Customer Bill of Rights to smartgrid@naperville.il.us, submit a comment via the online Citizen Support Center at www.naperville.il.us or call the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative hotline at (630) 420-6131.

As the world strives to reduce dependency on fossil fuels by incorporating more alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar and electric, the city will be upgrading its existing aging infrastructure to a smart grid. The smart grid initiative is an investment in Naperville's city-owned utility to modernize the electric grid using the latest digital technology to increase reliability, reduce operating costs, improve efficiency and reduce waste. This forward-thinking project gives residential and business customers more choices about how they use electricity and more control over what they pay for it.
