Fire near Lake Zurich injures one
One person was injured and hospitalized after being burned in a late-night house fire near Lake Zurich, fire officials said Friday.
The unidentified resident of the home in the 25000 block of Scott Road suffered burns and smoke inhalation while trying to put out the blaze that seemed to ignite in a bedroom, said Lake Zurich Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Dave Wheelock.
The injured resident was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where his condition is unknown.
Wheelock said firefighters were dispatched to the older home about 11:30 p.m. Thursday and saw heavy smoke and fire on the second floor.
He said a second alarm was immediately called to bring additional resources to the scene. The fire was later upgraded to a third alarm because of a lack of water in the unincorporated area between Lake Zurich and Barrington.
The fire spread to the roof and walls, officials said.
“It's not completely demolished, but the second floor is completely gutted,” Wheelock said. “It's uninhabitable right now and hard to say what the homeowners will decide to do with it.”
Four people were in the home when the fire started, and three escaped without injury, he added.
Red Cross was called in to assist those left homeless due to the blaze.
“It was a tough fire to put out because there are a lot of nooks and crannies in older homes like that,” Wheelock said. “All we can say is it was an older home, but we aren't sure how old it is.”
No damage estimate is available at this time. The fire remains under investigation.
