Mundelein High School stages 'Sabrina Fair'
It is one of the classic love stories of all time a true Cinderella story.
The chauffeur's daughter falls in love with the rich, handsome businessman. But which rich, handsome suitor will Sabrina end up with?
Untangling this love triangle is part of the charm and sophistication of the well-known 1950s comedy “Sabrina Fair,” which will be staged by MHS Theatre at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 4-6, in the Mundelein High School auditorium, 1350 W. Hawley St.
“Most people know this story as the movie ‘Sabrina,'” said MHS Theatre Director Jonathan Meier.
The first film was made in 1954 and starred Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and Audrey Hepburn. It was remade in 1995 with Harrison Ford, Greg Kinnear and Julia Ormond.
But “Sabrina Fair,” by Samuel Taylor, started as a successful play in 1953. The storyline is basically the same, but the play has several characters and subplots that are not in the movies.
“It is wonderfully sweet story, sort of old-fashioned and witty,” Meier said. “But the idea of struggling with one's place in society and discovering the true nature of love are both ideas that make the play relevant for today's audience.”
Senior Kate Starck takes on the role of Sabrina.
“I was pretty intimidated at first, playing such a well-known character,” Starck said. “But as we got further into the rehearsal process, I started to understand her more and more. She is just a young woman struggling to discover love and happiness. I have not seen the movie yet. I will watch Audrey Hepburn do the role after our show closes.”
Seniors Luke Cianciotto (Linus Jr.), Brett Cabrera (David), Arika Egan (Maude), Jack Davenport (Linus Sr.), Jessie Johnson (Julia) and Ben Fenton (Fairchild) play the other principal roles.
Supporting roles include Hayley Hoffmeyer (Gretchen), Caitlin Cappuccilli (Margaret) and Zac Traughber (Paul).
Rounding out the ensemble are Denise Reyes, Nadav Simon, Josie Paschke, Troy Peterson and Nicole Schaen. Sam Reisman and Molly Whitaker serve as assistant directors and Lisa Capasso is the stage manager.
Ticket prices are $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
