Railroad haters on the wrong track

In response to Jerry Marchese's letter of Oct. 3, “Tired of losing sleep over CN,” and to all those opposing this merger, I believe the railroad was there long before they bought their homes. Did they fail to see those railroad tracks?

Where does he see that “minorities rule” when the railroads are the backbone of the transportation system in this country, and move more tons per mile at less cost, using less fuel and emitting less pollution than any other mode? The railroads are also a major employer even in this economic situation we are in.

Is he aware that there are a number of states proposing to increase the Gross Vehicle Weight of a tractor/trailer from 80,000 pounds to over 90,000 pounds? Is he aware of the poor condition of our highways and bridges that will get even worse if this happens, plus safety issues?

It would be great if all those opposing the CN merger would look at the entire picture and the overall economic effect the rails have in our daily lives.
