Geneva Dist. 304 falls short on report card

While its average scores on statewide tests beat the overall average in Illinois, Geneva School District 304 did not meet state standards on its 2010 school report card.

Geneva Middle School South and all the district's elementary schools made Adequate Yearly Progress in reading and mathematics. Geneva Middle School North and Geneva High School did not.

This year, the state raised the passing bar to 77.5 percent. That means that 77.5 percent of all students, and 77.5 percent of students in various subgroups had to meet or exceed state standards on the test administered last spring.

Geneva Middle School North failed because only 65.4 percent of the students-with-disabilities subgroup scored well enough on the mathematics test. At Geneva Middle School South, 75.9 percent scored well enough, but that was acceptable after a 95 percent score accuracy confidence factor was applied.

Geneva High didn't make the mark because the students-with-disabilities subgroup scored 31.3 percent on reading and 29.2 percent on mathematics.

The state released the report cards Friday.

The report cards show 90.9 percent of district students tested at or above state standards on all state tests. The state average for students meeting or exceeding standards on state tests was 76.4 percent.

“We are extremely proud of our students and staff,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler said in a news release. “We measure student achievement in a variety of ways and hold high expectations in Geneva 304.”
