Cumberland school in Des Plaines shows off renovations

A couple hundred community members, city officials, parents and students attended the Cumberland Elementary open house last week to see renovations that began last spring and were completed this fall.

The evening began with student-led tours of the 62,388-square-foot building that houses more than 300 students in grades kindergarten through five. Originally built in 1954, Cumberland's last addition was in 1970.

Des Plaines Elementary School District 62 Superintendent Jane Westerhold said that the most outstanding features of the school are the Technology Integrated Learning Environment (TILE) and the modernized learning spaces.

“The TILE expands and reaches beyond technology,” she said. “In addition to the TILE, every classroom and learning space was renovated with brighter, more efficient lighting, paint, ceilings, casework and floor coverings.”

Renovations included:

A reconfigured bus drop off and expanded parking spaces.

An upgraded and reconfigured main entrance and offices.

Renovated restrooms.

Upgraded mechanical systems, electrical distribution, and fire alarm/fire sprinkler systems.

Reorganized grade-level locations and support functions to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of educational programs.

Parent Chandra Eby said she wondered how the reconfigured bus loop and parent drop-off would work. “I was doubtful that it would help with congestion. After using it, I love it. It is such an improvement.”

Sally Martin-Ranft, a parent and former Cumberland student whose family was involved in the Comprehensive Planning Process, raved about the brightly colored floor coverings, paint and improved lighting. “It's amazing how the renovations have revitalized this school,” she said.

Cumberland is the first school to be completed in a comprehensive three-year renovation and construction program that will enhance every District 62 school.
