Election irregularities? Complain to state's attorney
If you need to report irregularities on Election Day the Kane County State's Attorney will have a special complaint line open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Anyone who experiences or sees possible illegal election activity, such as electioneering, illegal placement of campaign signs or denial of voting rights, should call (630) 208-5328.
Assistant state's attorneys will take the calls and travel to polls to investigate.
“In the years that we have had this complaint line, we have found no notable violations. We expect that to remain the case Nov. 2 in what has been an emotional campaign season,” Kane County State's Attorney John Barsanti said in a news release.
According to Illinois election law, electioneering activities and campaign signs must be at least 100 feet away from the polling place or, if that 100-foot mark falls within the building, the entrance to the building hosting the polling place. A church or private school hosting a polling place is allowed to prohibit electioneering or campaign signs on its entire property.
In April 2009, the hotline received 18 calls, with half related to a hotly contested St. Charles mayoral race.
The hotline is not for election questions, such as polling times and places. For that, call the Kane County Clerk's Election Help Line at (630) 232-5990.
