Rec center key to Batavia's future
Batavia's usual nattering nabobs of negativism want you to believe that despite what the park district tells you, the recreation center referendum would raise taxes.
Not true.
Under state law, if any ballot measure would increase taxes, voters must be told. No such language for this referendum exists.
The recreation center would not raise taxes. The true issue is how much Batavia needs this recreation center, and how exciting this opportunity is.
The recreation center is proposed for a great location. Other than our beautiful riverwalk, downtown Batavia offers little for families. The recreation center would draw more families to the downtown, providing an opportunity for businesses to thrive. In addition, the project would add retail parking for downtown businesses that currently have little parking, and the recreation center would be a much needed facelift to what has become a stagnant downtown.
I believe the architects have proposed an impressive structure that feels new and exciting, yet complements the historic downtown.
Not to be ignored is the opportunity to build when costs are low, and to move Batavia forward during a difficult economic time. It is an opportunity to celebrate Batavia no matter how long you have lived here.
The recreation center is a smart long-term investment in our community. It would build on the work of past Batavians and it would provide a great opportunity to current residents. Most importantly, it sets an important example of stewardship for generations to come.
