Lake Co. Board Dist. 19 candidates discuss transparency

Roberta Potempa, a Democrat from Lake Zurich, is challenging incumbent Lake County District 19 Board Member Craig Taylor on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Taylor, a Republican from Lake Zurich, was appointed to the District 19 seat when former board member Michael Talbett resigned.

District 19 covers most of Lake Zurich and Kildeer, as well as portions of Long Grove and Hawthorn Woods.

The candidates were asked by the Daily Herald to answer questions regarding issues that many voters in District 19 will face in the coming years. Their answers have been edited for spelling, grammar and style.

Q. The state's revised Freedom of Information Act guidelines renewed focus on open government. Name one specific step you would take if elected to increase government transparency in your Lake County office.

Potempa. I would love to see the Lake County check register posted online so that all the taxpayers can view where their dollars are going and to whom.

Taylor. Lake County has been recognized for being a model for transparent government. We must continue to maintain and improve on that reputation. I, personally, at my expense, have placed my name and county position on my auto as well as on my shirts so constituents know who I am and where I am. I do this for transparency sake and to encourage folks to engage me with their questions or concerns when they see me out and about. Since initiating this practice, several other board members have followed my example. I will continue to be open and transparent while I work for the people of District 19 and Lake County.

Q. Lake County's minority population has been growing dramatically over the last decade. Describe a specific new program you support and will implement to better serve those communities.

Potempa. Lake County should accept a Matricula Consular Card as a valid form of ID.

Taylor. With the possibility of program cuts on the horizon, I doubt there will be funds available for any new programs. As I have said in the past, I will support and be sensitive to programs involving our minority population. However, I feel there is a balance to be considered as well. All communities have minority populations as well as people in need. We must make sure they are all treated fairly and equally.
