Batavia's Gustafson students encouraged to walk to school
Students who walk to Alice Gustafson Elementary School in Batavia were treated to small gifts from surprise visitors Wednesday, as the school wraps up its celebration of International Walk to School Month.
Batavia firefighters and school district officials greeted the walkers along their routes, handing out souvenir pencils and stickers and fresh fruit.
It is the third year the school has observed the month. Parent Dianne Peterson, a member of Batavia's Environmental Commission, organizes the activities, encouraging parents not to drive their kids to school. Most of the students live in the neighborhood and aren't eligible for busing. Peterson reminds them that not only is walking good exercise, it helps their parents save money on fuel and reduces exhaust emission.
