Geneva sleep center earns honors
Delnor Hospital Sleep Disorders Center in Geneva recently earned program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the largest professional medical society for clinicians, researchers and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine and is considered to be the gold standard.
To receive accreditation, the center underwent a detailed inspection of both the facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts and physician training, to ensure it meets or exceeds all AASM standards. Additionally, the organization evaluated the center's goals to ensure they were clearly stated and included plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care.
“Successful accreditation is a recognized benchmark to demonstrate adherence to quality standards. Accreditation is ongoing process that ensures our sleep center will meet or exceed accreditation standards as set forth by the AASM. My colleagues and I are very proud to be able to offer this service to this community as a part of Delnor Hospital ancillary services,” states Dr. Sunil Desai, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center, and board certified in sleep medicine.
Moreover, “It's good for the patients, and it's good for the center to be accredited it encourages ongoing learning, discussion and research, and education to provide better care,” adds Dr. Desai.
Chronic sleep problems affect more than 40 million Americans annually, having a big impact on health and happiness. Insufficient sleep is linked to medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.
The Sleep Disorders Center has four sleep study rooms, all with attached bathrooms, and one larger control room. Each room has a full-size bed and a lazy boy recliner. Dressers with nightstands and lamps are also an added touch. The goal was to make each room feel more like a bedroom rather than a hospital room. Even the bedding has been chosen to give that homelike feel. Since its inception in 1998, the Sleep Lab has helped thousands of people improve their sleep.
