Wolves waste third-period lead, fall in overtime
ROCKFORD -- The Rockford IceHogs rallied from a 2-goal, third-period deficit to beat the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in overtime at the Rockford MetroCentre on Saturday night.
Forwards Jason Krog (goal, assist) and Darren Haydar (2 assists), Andrew Kozek (goal) and Nigel Dawes (goal) led the Wolves. Igor Makarov scored the game-winning goal on the power play with 47 seconds remaining in overtime. Center Ryan Potulny took a shot from the near circle, which Makarov redirected from the top of the crease past Wolves goaltender Drew MacIntyre.
The Wolves opened scoring on the power-play 1:45 into the game when Krog fired a slap shot from the far circle past a screened IceHogs goalie Hannu Toivonen.
The Wolves made it 2-0 at 14:32 of the second period. Andre Deveaux won a face-off back to Boris Valabik, who flung a shot from the point that was blocked by a Rockford defender. Kozek picked up the loose puck in the slot and sent it past Toivonen.
Rockford pulled within 2-1 when it scored a short-handed goal just over two minutes later. Right wing Ben Smith collected a loose puck in the slot and ripped a shot past MacIntyre, top shelf.
The Wolves went up 3-1 at 3:06 of the third period when Krog found a trailing Dawes on a 3-on-2 rush, and Dawes wristed a shot past Toivonen, top shelf.
Toivonen stopped 23 shots.
Rockford cut the lead to 3-2 when Rob Kilnkhammer redirected a Chris DiDomineco shot past MacIntyre at 5:04.
IceHogs defender Ivan Vishnevskiy tied it with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 11:51 when he blasted a one-timer from the near circle past MacIntyre.
MacIntyre (0-2-0) stopped 29 of 33 shots in regulation and overtime.
