Scouting Mount Vernon at Grayslake Central
Mt. Vernon (3-5) at Grayslake Central (4-4)
When: 1 p.m., Saturday
Last week: Grayslake Central d. Grayslake North, 34-7; Mt. Vernon d. Centralia, 52-26.
Skinny: Grayslake Central coach Nick Goshe calls Mt. Vernon an "up-and-coming team." Goshe has an up-and-coming program. The Rams will become playoff-eligible if they can stop the three-game winning streak of Mt. Vernon's Rams, who scored only 53 points in their first five games, but have put up 108 in their last three. Mt. Vernon, which finished 3-2 in the South Seven Conference, went 2-7 last year but made the state playoffs in six of the previous seven seasons. Grayslake Central hasn't been to the playoffs since 2003, before Grayslake North opened. Goshe's squad is led on the ground by Vinnie Culhane (682 rushing yds.), Joey Valdivia (622 yds.) and Jahard Nelson (358 yds.), but last week QB Ray Beckman enjoyed his best game, throwing for 221 yards and 2 TDs. "This is again a playoff game for us," Goshe said. ... Mt. Vernon to Grayslake is nearly a six-hour trip, 325 miles. ... The schools have similar enrollments.
