Alcohol-supplying dad barred from seeing son for a year

An Algonquin father who gave his 13-year-old son so much alcohol the boy required hospitalization wiped away tears as he was sentenced to one year of conditional discharge, which includes having no contact with his son.

Albert Loleng, 49, of the 0-100 block of Lake Gillian Court, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges of endangering the life of a child and unlawful delivery of alcohol to a minor.

In sentencing Loleng on Friday, McHenry County Judge Gordon Graham noted the defendant's lack of criminal history in the past 25 years. But while Graham did not consider Loleng a danger to the community or society, the judge did bar any contact with Loleng's son.

“I hope this was one incident of abhorrent behavior never to happen again,” Graham said.

A tearful Loleng told the judge he was sorry.

In addition to no contact with his son, Loleng also must undergo a substance abuse and alcohol evaluation. He faced up to a year in jail and fines up to $2,500.

Loleng had spent 60 days in McHenry County Jail for the August incident.

In a petition filed by the boy's mother for an order of protection, the boy was found unconscious at the family home by his sister. The sister called police and the teen was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Algonquin police said Loleng and his son had been drinking wine and tequila before the boy fell unconscious in the master bedroom. Besides alcohol, the boy also had marijuana in his system, according to the petition.

The mother's petition states that police told her her son could have died if the sister had not sought medical treatment right away.
