Guerin (2-6, 0-4) at Aurora Central Catholic (2-6, 1-3)

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year: Did not play.

Last week: Walther Lutheran 46, Guerin 0; St. Francis 42, Aurora Central 7.

Outlook: Three wins aren't many. But when Aurora Central Catholic hasn't won more than twice in a season since 2002, this Suburban Christian Conference Gold division game is big. “For the seniors it's a heck of a way to finish,” said Chargers coach Brian Casey. “Is it everything we wanted when camp started? No. But it's a heck of a way to finish. ... And for the younger guys it can be a huge positive to go into the weight room...” That said, Aurora Central should have the edge in size, speed, athleticism and physicality against the Gators, who won their first two games but none since. Guerin's main offensive threats are quarterback Tommy Kelly, running backs Justin Williams and Nick D'Allessandro and the talented receiver-defensive back, John Dabe. Yet without a sustained ground game their top plays often come via now-familiar trick plays, flea-flickers, direct snaps. Aurora Central aims to harass Kelly with the one-two punch of defensive ends T.J. Ali and Mike Reuland, and control the middle of the line with usual suspects John Belovich and Kent Brauweiler, with backup by linebacker Nick Holzer (70 tackles through 7 games). Avoiding sucking up against the run, then getting beat deep by Kelly-to-Dabe will be the challenge. Offensively, as Casey said, the Chargers simply need to finish. He likes what the ground-based offense has done, up to but not including the red zone. There's a good balance on the ground between sophomore Steven Amoni, Kyle Clechenko, Zach Tobin and leading rusher Marcus Jefferson, and it'd be nice for quarterback Stewart deWaard to go out with a bang after three often rough years as a starter. “The biggest goal for each individual would be to walk away with a win,” Casey said.
