No one injured in Elk Grove Village apartment fire

An Elk Grove Village apartment building was evacuated Thursday night when a garbage bin fire filled the top two floors of the complex with smoke.

Fire crews responded to the building on the 1000 block of Charlela Lane at approximately 8:30 p.m. and found smoke coming out of the top two floors of the five story building, fire officials said.

Crews found that the fire was started at the bottom of the garbage chute in a garbage bin and the smoke had billowed up the chute like a chimney to the top floors, officials said.

The fire was already extinguished by the building's sprinkler system when crews arrived on the scene.

Fire officials said the top two floors received minimal smoke damage, but the entire building received water damage from the sprinklers.

All the residents had returned to their apartments by 10 p.m. and all the units remained habitable, fire officials said.
