Avoid red-light cameras, radar guns with your iPhone
Tired of getting caught by a red-light camera or a squad with a radar gun? Chicago-based Cobra Electronics Corp., which makes radar detection devices, has launched its Cobra iRadar Detection System. It works with your iPhone and another device installed inside your vehicle.
The app for your iPhone is free, but you'll have to shell out $149 to $169.95 for the detector for your car.
“This is for people who drive, anyone commuting to and from work, to help them detect when they're under detection,” said Cobra spokesman Chris Kooistra.
The app can be found at iTunes for your iPhone. It uses Bluetooth wireless technology to connect the iPhone to the detector, and the iPhone multi-touch display to control the detector's settings. The system enables you to view, hear and log alerts for radar or laser guns as well as upcoming red-light cameras, he said.
Kooistra, as well as Commander Tim Veit of the Des Plaines Police Department, said that radar detectors are legal in Illinois, but not in Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Cobra will sell its product nationwide starting next week.
The app also uses the GPS technology in the iPhone so the app can alert drivers to upcoming speed and red-light cameras, which update daily automatically.
The box can be installed in your vehicle and can be purchased at Best Buy, Sears, Radio Shack and elsewhere.
You can learn more about the system at CobraiRadar.com.
Surfing: If you want a Motorola Backflip Android phone, you could go to the online Motorola Store and buy it for $499.99. Or you could try Amazon.com and get it for 1 cent... that's no mistake. Amazon ordinarily lists the Backflip for $349.99, but this week it is running a Penny Promotion, said Amazon spokeswoman Stacey Keller.
AmazonWireless is offering the Backflip and about 100 smartphones, including HTC Aria, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Blackberry Bold 9000, each for one penny with a new service contract with a carrier. See amazonwireless.com, click on “Browse: All Phones” and then narrow your search by price with “penny phone.”
