Village of Lombard employees volunteer, do Make A Difference

With USA Weekend's annual “Make A Difference Day” slated for Saturday, Oct. 23 this year, there was an opportunity to look at and embrace the volunteer work village employees perform during the course of a year.

Volunteer opportunities are often presented as a result of events, projects or work-sponsored functions in which employees are needed. An extremely successful event that was just completed, with the help of a volunteer coordinator and many volunteer helpers, was the village fire, police and public works sponsored event, “Touch A Truck.” The event was perhaps the most successful event ever sponsored during Fire Prevention Week in village history.

Village employees volunteer for any number of causes or organizations including the Lombard Kiwanis Club, Lombard Rotary, Lombard Lions Club, Lombard Junior Women's Club, Lombard Service League, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. They volunteer for their churches, their children's little league or soccer teams and their high school booster clubs. PTAs, school board, church councils, YMCA, PADS, local food pantries, soup kitchens and the Greater Chicagoland Food Depository. The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Foundation, conservation foundations, Junior Achievement program, Make A Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and a number of other causes close to the hearts of many.

“The village of Lombard provides many opportunities for residents to volunteer to help others, making the spirit of community truly a cornerstone of our Village," said Lombard Village President William Mueller. “Whether it's volunteering for the blood drives, sharing your talents as a member of the many boards and commissions that are served by village residents or contributing in some way to the various drives that the village coordinates throughout the year, the residents of Lombard are truly a very giving people, as are our employees."

The Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others—a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors, as stated on the website. It is proclaimed as the nation's largest day of service.
