Des Plaines Library board hopes to avoid Dec. 5 closing

The Des Plaines Public Library Board Tuesday approved closing the library on Dec. 5 if the city of Des Plaines does not cosign a bank loan of up to $1.5 million and Cook County property tax receipts are delayed.

The library board also directed staff to come up with an alternate plan to keep the library open through the year end with a skeleton crew even if no monies come through from the city or county, Library Director Holly Sorensen said. The library board will discuss that alternate option during a special board meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26. Sorensen said the library needs only $500,000 to get through the end of the year.

The Des Plaines City Council will discuss the library's loan request at its Nov. 1 meeting.
