BGHS seniors honored as among state's best writers

Buffalo Grove High School is proud to announce that two members of the senior class, Thomas Jorda and Ambria Bernardi, both Arlington Heights residents, have received recognition from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for their superior writing skills.

Jorda and Bernardi were two of only 34 students in the state of Illinois to earn the 2010 NCTE Achievement Award in Writing. Jorda and Bernardi submitted two essays and were judged on the basis of how effectively they used language to inform and move an audience.

Their English teacher, Kate Glass, comments, “These are two of the strongest writers I've ever worked with. Both of these kids are so insightful and dedicated to their craft. They really deserve this award.

A total of 543 students in the nation were selected as outstanding writers in the 2010 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. The recipients were chosen from 1,641 students nominated in their junior year by their teachers, from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, the Virgin Islands, and American schools abroad.

Jorda and Bernardi, the only two District 214 students to win recognition from the NCTE this fall, will be recognized at an upcoming district Board of Education meeting. Buffalo Grove High School also received a commendation for its excellent instruction in writing.
