Gaspari stays focused on his team

Batavia's Mike Gaspari did not spend time giving sentimental speeches about what possibly could have been his final game at Bulldog Stadium as a head coach on Friday, in St. Charles North's 38-28 victory.

In his 26th year as the Bulldogs' head coach, Gaspari is retiring as the school's athletic director after this academic year. Friday he reiterated what he said early this season he had not reached a definitive decision whether he will return as head coach or as an assistant.

The closest Gaspari came was bringing up Richard M. Daley's recent announcement that he will not seek another term as mayor of Chicago, saying, “It's time.

Gaspari most likely will continue with the program in some capacity, but in any event he does not want to present a distraction to the team while it's in season. He mentioned an announcement may be made Nov. 9 at Batavia's football awards banquet.

“It's never been about me, he stressed again on the field Friday, “it's always been about the kids.

Batavia's kids may give Gaspari another home game yet. They stand a great chance of getting into the playoffs, meeting 2-6 Streamwood with the crucial fifth win on the line again.

“It's kind of up to our team now, Gaspari said.
