Keep townships; they're efficient

I read with interest the Sept. 9 letter from Bob Anderson once again beating his drum to abolish township government.

Mr. Anderson says that by eliminating townships, services would improve and the cost of local government would be reduced. While I agree that government needs to be as efficient as possible, Mr. Anderson continues to look at peripheral issues with respect to government efficiency. The cost of government is not determined by counting the number of units. It is determined by measuring expenditures. Reports in Illinois and other states have shown that township government is efficient and that combining it into larger governments would increase expenditures.
