Walking to fight hunger

After reaching a huge milestone last year and surpassing $1 million raised to fight hunger, members of 20 Naperville area churches and organizations started work on their second million on Sunday.

For the 28th straight year, the groups took part in the Naperville area CROP Walk, a national effort through Church World Service that raises money to combat hunger across the world.

After taking in $61,355 in 2009, the Naperville area walk reached a total of $1,003,054 and had a target this year of $72,000 and 700 walkers.

Locally, money and goods also are donated to the Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Naperville. The walk took off from Grace United Methodist Church.

Participants gather for a rally on Sunday inside Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville before the annual Naperville area CROP Walk. Organizers estimate up to 600 people participated from about 20 religious communities in an effort to raise $72,000. Suzanne Caraker
