Eads Bridge in St. Louis to close for 40 days

ST. LOUIS -- The Eads Bridge connecting Missouri and Illinois at St. Louis is closing Monday for 40 days of maintenance work.

The shutdown means motorists will have to use an alternate span over the Mississippi River. Officials suggest the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge to the north or the Poplar Street Bridge to the south.

The historic Eads Bridge will undergo repairs to the deck and expansion joints.

A new, four-lane bridge is being built near the Eads to ease congestion at one of the nation's busiest crossings. The $670 million bridge is expected to be completed by the middle part of this decade.
