Nine year sentence for armed robbery

A Des Plaines teenager who said he committed armed robbery earlier this year because he wanted to buy a present for his 1-year-old son pleaded guilty Thursday in Rolling Meadows.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge John Scotillo sentenced 17-year-old Nathaious Carr to nine years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea to armed robbery with a bludgeon.

Carr arrived at a Palatine apartment for a prearranged meeting at about 3 p.m. Jan. 10, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Crowe. He brandished what appeared to be a silver revolver and struck one of the victims on the forehead, Crowe said. The defendant, who was 16 at the time, took property from the victim and from several other people who were present, Crowe said. Two days after the robbery Carr admitted his involvement to a prosecutor, Crowe said.

He was charged as an adult for the class X felony, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Defense attorney Lawrence O'Reilly asked the court to consider Carr's age and immaturity as mitigating factors in sentencing.

“Sixteen-year-old brains are not fully developed, O'Reilly said. “This young man made a serious error in judgment.

Carr, who O'Reilly says was a member of his school's honor roll, expressed remorse during the sentencing.

His mother left the courthouse in tears.
